Jay is currently one of our Maintenance Managers whose 20+ year career path is a shining example of dedication, hard work, and a willingness to learn. His journey began at St. Clair College in Windsor, where he undertook a program in Mechanical Engineering followed by hands-on experience in an apprenticeship at Conestoga. Shortly after, he worked with a machine-building group where he helped build machines for local suppliers. It was his stepping stone to a long and successful career path at TMMC with his role starting as a Team Member, and moving from the Team Leader to Group Leader, and currently Manager.

Learn more about Jay and what it is like to work at TMMC, what he values and exits him, and what he loves most about his role.

What is it like to work at TMMC?

With every new vehicle model, there is innovation, equipment and technology. With the influx of automation, we have new robots, software, and controllers that make the job interesting and engaging. The constant evolution means that you’re always learning and growing. It’s a company that values teamwork and encourages everyone to learn and grow at their own pace.

What do you value most working at TMMC?

The stability. There’s a secure routine; you know when you’re coming in and going home. There’s the option to work extra hours or engage in projects if you want to and it’s a place that supports your career growth and provides for your family.

TMMC’s culture is also focused on teamwork and constantly trying to improve. You are continuously asking WHY and improving not just the equipment, but yourself too.

What’s the most exciting project you’ve ever worked on at TMMC?

The launch of the RX350.  You could sense the pride and energy that went behind the vehicle – everyone was excited about the new changes.

We’re helping shape the future of the automotive industry. Every new vehicle model change is exciting as you see it come together from the ground up. Especially in the welding shop, you can witness this for pilots, including the design specifications.

What do you love most about your role?

I love the ability to consistently interact with others, understand how team members deal with challenges, and how I can help them navigate through them. Every day is different, and I am amazed at how the team quickly thinks of a countermeasure or alternate way to keep things running. It is truly inspiring.

If someone wants an opportunity, they will find it. If a Team Member expresses an interest, your Manager will work with you to find it for you. There are also opportunities that we don’t post externally, such as projects and pilot teams.

What are the 2 best kept secrets about working at TMMC?

TMMC has excellent vacation benefits and they are front-loaded. Team Members get 14 paid days off when first joining and they are given more year over year. Right from the beginning, Team Members are guaranteed 10 days off in the Summer.

Safety is key. Team Members work hand in hand with Production for any concerns. Every time you approach a job, you will observe and assess safety. If it’s planning, you will get a risk assessment to review. That’s just the start, if you find something else it’s in your power to stop or call for support.

We give the Team Members the opportunity to have a voice and be a part of any solution/problem they are experiencing. We encourage the team to reflect and share their inputs on continuous improvement opportunities.
